Its All UX

UX design is not limited to the confines of interfaces like menus and HUDs. Every single aspect of a game benefits from collaboration with the UX design team. From level guidance to camera work, from tutorialization to engaging mechanics, its all User Experience.

My UX Process

Juicing The Mechanics

When designing UX, I consider all of the ways I can communicate Affordances, Signifiers, and Feedback to the player. My first step is to layout all of the categories I can think of that are able to communicate with the player, and I try to come up with at least 1 item in each category for every mechanic, action, and interaction in the game. It is a lengthy but rewarding process, and I feel that it allows me to squeeze the most juice out of every mechanic.

1. List the Mechanics

List every action the player can take, as well as the Signal, Updated, and Resolved state of it.

2. Use Categories to Generate Examples

Try to come up with at least one way to communicate the mechanic's affordances, signifiers, and feedback from each category.

3. Define Importance

For every method of communication listed, state the importance it has to communication. I like to define them as Critical, Nice to Have, or Polish

4. Define Difficulty

For every method of communication listed, state how difficult it might be to impliment.

5. Prototype and Iterate

Prototype, test, and iterate on the UX to get maximum juice out of the mechanic. With enough time, every mechanic can feel absolutely amazing.
